A picture of my sister in law from just a few years back, popped into my head as I saw her holding her belly with anticipation in her eyes. She was days away from meeting her last precious pumpkin.

How in the world had the years gone by in such a flash? The moments and memories of times with those who are no longer with us flashed through my mind as I snapped away our family’s latest adventure at Grave’s Farm. Not only family, but also friends, and classmates, and teachers, and birthdays were celebrated in these rows, and acres of vines. The memories were filled with the precious orange pumpkins and delighted laughing children. Some of the days were cloudy, some were so hot and sweaty, and a few were just like this one-muddy, sticky, and just plain fun.

The Grave’s Farm Adventure also holds memories of years and years of loaded up cars caravanning out on Gateway class field trips. Little warriors could sure load down the trailer and fill up the hay bales to overflowing while waiting in anticipation to get to the patch. Somehow there always seemed to be a dog around who wouldn’t miss the ride, so up he would jump to ride out with the kids. When the kids set out to find their treasured pumpkins, competitions for the biggest, funniest, and smallest ones began right away. The Graves one rule of “pick only the one you are able to carry on your own”, may have kept a few boys and girls from winning the biggest pumpkin category. But parents certainly appreciated that stipulation.

Looking out into the field I was also reminded of some funny times when a few personal items mysteriously disappeared out there. Oddly enough, it was almost always an adult who seemed to do the losing. Yours truly, happened to be one of those parents. I was sure grateful when my phone was discovered at the far end of the patch where my daughter had found her perfect pumpkin. It was only a few years later that a “search committee” was sent out to help a precious teacher look for her missing keys to her classroom. To my knowledge-those keys are still among the vines or possibly buried beneath a few layers of soil. But either way, a little bit of Warrior history was left behind in the pumpkin patch, and the sweet memories of that day and many others are treasured in the minds of both mamas and children.

This year will be my 9th year of attending the GW pumpkin patch roundup. I can’t help but think of how very grateful I am for the Warrior Tradition of spending a fall day each year out in nature, at a farm where kids get to experience God’s beautiful creation. As my oldest daughter moves further into young adulthood, I find myself holding on to these memories even tighter. My youngest is passing through childhood all too quickly and I don’t want to miss a moment of either of their lives. My beautiful step-daughters have also been gifted to me to love and cherish, and of course our tradition of Graves is being weaved into our family’s new beginnings. This one sweet memory -filled place at Grave’s Farm has become a yearly reminder to cherish my girls and be ever so grateful that God has picked them for me to love.

I think the Psalmist says it best…

Don’t you see that children are God’s best gift?
the fruit of the womb his generous legacy?
Like a warrior’s fistful of arrows
are the children of a vigorous youth.
Oh, how blessed are you parents,
with your quivers full of children!

Psalm 127:3-5

Thank you GW family for partnering with parents to love our children and for the commitment of teaching, instilling biblical truths and being an example of the steadfast love of Jesus to our children. The sweet traditions and field trips offer more than just fun, they have given myself, and my girls a lifetime of memories and a deeper gratitude to God for His best gifts. His children.

It is also exciting to welcome our incoming freshman class as they take the next step in their academic journey!

We enjoyed activities such as the waterslide, teambuilding games, and late-night dodgeball. We also got to spend an encouraging and edifying "Guys Only" and "Ladies Only" teaching times as various faculty and staff members taught about passion, purity, and perspective for the new year.

Students were placed on mixed-grade teams for our year-long competition which got started with the traditional leg-lift competition (congratulations to Elaina and Andrew!).

We ended our time with an encouraging exhortation from Coach Wigley to be intentional about sharing the gospel with the people around us.

Lone Tree is always a great time and a great way to get the year started on a positive note, and I am looking forward to a successful year with a great group of students.

If so, then it might be time to begin prepping for, the often dreaded, potty training. Two-words that elicit anxiety in even the coolest of parents.

Fortunately, the Gateway Christian Preschool director, Missy Howerton, has compiled a cheat sheet for parents to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Training a child that’s not ready will only cause added frustration for you and your child, Missy suggests looking for these signs that your child is ready for the potty:

           - When they tell you they are wet or bring you a diaper

           - When they are able to pull up and down their own pants

           - If they wake up dry (this is a great sign!)

           - When they are curious about the potty

Once you’ve established your tot is ready, Missy suggests prepping them for potty training with these tips:

          - Make your child feel included in potty training (They want to be involved!)

                     - Have your child pick out their potty

                     - Let your child pick out their own big boy/girl underwear

          - Many children fear toilets, they want to know it will not “suck them down”

so to speak. Watching their parents sit on a potty and flush reassures

            the child it is safe.

          - Children are fascinated by the potty

                      - They may try to flush other household items when they are potty training

so it is important to emphasize the toilet is only for pee and poop.

The prep work is done, now it’s time to train!

          - Once you have committed to potty training only place your child in underwear.

            No more diapers.
                      - Going back and forth from diapers to underwear can be confusing for

                        your child.

                      - It may be a lot of laundry at first, but it will be worth it in the long run.

          - Know the key time to take them to sit on the potty
                      - 15 to 20 minutes after drinking or eating

                      - After waking up from naps

                      - As soon as they wake up in the morning

                      - Don't worry, you will learn your child’s normal cycle

When they are playing they will not want to go to the potty. Try teaching them to “pause” on play time, take a potty break then return to play.

Just remember, every child is different, some may catch on more quickly than others, just be consistent and know that they will eventually “get it”. I mean, how many 16-year-olds do you see still running around in diapers?

While Mrs. Garcia brought an authentic serape (shawl/blanket worn as a cloak ), a hand-painted clay cup along with many other crafts handmade in Mexico.

They wrapped up the lesson with a feast of rice, beans, cheese & tortillas. K3 had so much fun learning about Mexico!

Here at Gateway Christian School, we've leaped into the 2018/2019 school-year with much excitement and anticipation! This year, we added six incredible, talented new teachers to our teaching staff.

All the teachers at Gateway Christian School, from our 2-year-olds teachers to our high school educators, dedicate their time and energy to teaching, guiding and assisting students in their educational and spiritual journeys.

Take a few minutes to take a glimpse at the wonderful new educators that are leading your children this year!

Cheryl Anderson, 4th Grade

Background:

Cheryl has been teaching for five years with experience teaching pre-school students - eighth graders. In addition, to substitute teaching and being a kindergarten teacher, Cheryl has led students in small and large groups in a church setting as well through Vacation Bible School and Awanas.

What is your teaching passion?

I love being able to talk about Jesus!

What drew you to Gateway?

Being a Christian School, small classes and, mostly, Mrs. Parker (the Elementary Principal).

What are your teaching goals for the 18/19 school year?

To grow and mature young minds in all areas and to put Christ first.

What opportunities do you offer your students in the classroom?

[I provide] a lot of opportunities to develop responsibility and leadership skills.

Can you clearly define your teaching philosophy?

Respect and responsibility cover most rules.

What are your passions outside of teaching?

Reading actual books, swimming and painting.

Fun Fact: I have been cliff jumping!

Lori Chitwood, 4th Grade

Background:

Lori's teaching journey began in a Sunday School classroom when she was just fifteen years old. Since then she's taught a variety of ages from babies to young adults. Her experience with children includes seven years as a Children's, Youth & Family Pastor, five years of Pre-School teaching, six years as a Home-School Mom, four years as a K5 - sixth-grade Tech Teacher and two years substitute teaching.

What is your teaching passion?

My passion is seeing the "light bulb" come on when students realize the concept of what is being taught.

What drew you to Gateway?

I am a Gateway Graduate. My sister taught English for eight years and my mother retired after teaching for twenty years at Gateway.

What makes you unique from other teachers?

My own personal experience from the vast non-traditional classroom. I'm all about allowing kids to move in class. We frequently stand while working.

What are your teaching goals for the 18/19 school year?

1. For students to enjoy coming to school. 2. For students to begin [to be] self advocates.

How would you describe the atmosphere in your classroom?

Providing an optimistic/positive attitude in my class is important. Instead of "I can't" or "This is too hard", ask "What am I missing?", this may take some time and effort.

Can you clearly define your teaching philosophy?

All students are individuals and learn in their own unique ways. I like to help students realize their learning style.

What are your passions outside of teaching?

I have always had a heart for children. My husband and I are CAST volunteers.

Jessica Doege, 5th Grade

Background:

Jessica is a young, vibrant teacher whose passion for teaching and children is sure to inspire her classes. Jessica spent the summer working closely with children while interning at Christ's Church. In college, she worked as a teaching assistant for Freshman courses. Along with a teaching certification, Jessica is also certified to teach TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

What is your teaching passion?

I have a deep passion for teaching English, reading, music and history. I love seeing my kids exploring their creative and artistic side!

What drew you to Gateway?

I interned at Christ's Church with a former Gateway teacher, Jayci Grantham, and have heard nothing but amazing things about the staff and school in general.

What makes you unique from other teachers?

I actually got my degree in Psychology, so I have a deep understanding and overall curiosity about child development and the human mind.

What are your teaching goals for the 18/19 school year?

To ignite a genuine passion in each of my students to not only want to learn more about the world around them, but about the Lord and His word as well.

What opportunities do you offer your students in the classroom?

Each Friday we award a student for Christ-like behavior and overall outstanding actions towards other students. The winner of the "Doege-Do-Gooder" award will receive their favorite candy and other various treats.

How would you describe the atmosphere in your classroom?

Warm, inviting and open. I want my students to feel comfortable asking questions and being honest in class.

Can you clearly define your teaching philosophy?

Every student has the potential to succeed if provided the necessary love, respect and tools to learn.

What are your passions outside of teaching?

I have a heart for worship and love playing piano during worship services at the Roswell House of Prayer. I also love tea, rain, and the great outdoors. There's nothing better than a nice hike in the mountains.

Fun Fact: I almost accepted a teaching position in South Korea before God led me here to Gateway.

Crystal Graham, 6th Grade

Background:

Crystal is heading into her sixth year as an educator, but she has over ten years of experience in education working as a tutor, in aftercare programs, in daycare programs and by serving as a children's pastor. Her knowledge with children is vast ranging from tiny tots to seventh graders.

What is your teaching passion?

My passion is teaching kids the Bible! I want more than anything else for my students to gain an understanding and appreciation for God's word and to learn their true identity--that they have been created by their heavenly Father, that they bear His image, they have a purpose, and they are loved and accepted by Him. I am also passionate about helping children to learn and develop a positive attitude towards learning and life.

What drew you to Gateway?

The Christian atmosphere, and the freedom to teach the Bible to my students.

What makes you unique from other teachers?

I don't know if this is necessarily unique, but it certainly part of what makes me who I am. I truly have a love for the Word of God and a desire to help children learn, from an early age, what I was not taught or never grasped. I also feel like I have lived through some things that allow me to draw in some of the more challenging students. I have a big heart for those who are confused, lost, and hurting.

What are your teaching goals for the 18/19 school year?

My goals for this year are to help my students discover their true identity, learn to use their gifts and talents to serve others, and to develop a growth mindset towards learning and life. I am all about a hands-on classroom and meeting children where they are. I believe in challenging children when appropriate, but also providing support needed for them to feel success. I want everyone in this classroom to feel like they are important and that they can do all God is asking them to do!

What opportunities do you offer your students in the classroom?

I want my students to be proactive learners and citizens and will give them the opportunity to help in class through our classroom jobs, as well as to lead a Bible study, and "teach" their classmates through projects and presentations.

How would you describe the atmosphere in your classroom?

Engaged, safe, fun, and focused!

Can you clearly define your teaching philosophy?

Colossians 2:3 says that, "God has hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge in Christ." My philosophy of education is: If we are to truly educate our children and expect them to adhere to a biblical world view, the word of God and gospel of Christ must be central to our teaching.

What are your passions outside of teaching?

I am passionate about empowering children (and really all people) with the truth of who they are and how greatly loved they are. I am passionate about reaching all nations, including the nation of Israel for Christ. Last but definitely not least, I am passionate about loving and spending time with my family.

Fun Facts: I am wife to the love of my life and mom to four awesome kids. Although I grew up in Roswell, I have been gone for the past twelve years. Over the summer, my family and I moved here, following God's call into children's ministry at Christ's Church, where we now attend. I love to read and learn, and especially enjoy cooking, baking, and trying new recipes (although when school is in session, that slows down!). Oh, and I can walk on my knees with my legs crossed criss-cross applesauce! :-D

Angela Fogle, 7th/8th: English; 7th: History; 11th: American History; 12th: Government/Economics

Background:

Angela has been teaching at the College level for nine years, at Dallas Baptist University, spending four years teaching Freshman Foundations, then joining their full-time faculty teaching marketing for five years. Angela has also previously devoted time to teaching and imparting wisdom in Sunday school classes to sophomores-seniors. Her wealth of knowledge, partnered with her experience working with teens are sure to create an enriching learning environment.

What is your teaching passion?

I love learning - I am the quintessential nerd. I love reading, so naturally I am drawn to English and history. I also love telling stories - I love how all of history is God's story! I hope my students walk away with a passion for learning and seeking God's Story in everything!

What drew you to Gateway?

Everyone I talk to who either teaches at, or attends Gateway loves it! Everyone I met was wonderful - I love the people and the atmosphere! I also love teaching in light of God's word and truth.

What makes you unique from other teachers?

My Bachelor of Arts is in Communications and I have a business degree. Technically marketing is my "specialty" but I love literature and history. English proficiency is a basic necessity for marketing and communications. My love for history comes from my father. He studied military history in particular.

What are your teaching goals for the 18/19 school year?

All first year teachers focus on survival. Seriously, I am hoping to impart a love for learning and find creative ways for students to engage in the story of history and the power of literature to communicate thoughts, feelings and ideas!

What opportunities do you offer your students in the classroom?

In English I hope to give my students opportunities to think critically and write creatively. We'll be reading several novels and writing, writing, writing! In history, my upperclassmen are studying and presenting their thoughts about current events and I hope to plan some field trips/service opportunities.

How would you describe the atmosphere in your classroom?

Is it possible to be orderly and laid back? I like to be serious about our lecture/study time, but I also like to take time to talk and discuss ideas. A good agenda for each day includes thinking, listening and discussion. Games are also a great way to study for quizzes.

Can you clearly define your teaching philosophy?

To teach students to thoughtfully engage every subject through the lens of God's word. As I partner with parents, who are the primary disciples of their students, I desire to see every student think biblically in every area of their life.

What are your passions outside of teaching?

I enjoy reading, watching movies, and musical theater/drama. Everything reminds me of a movie or musical quote. History is a drama of the world - I consider it all closely related. I love historical dramas like Les Miserables, The Scarlet Pampernel, etc., but I also love fantasy fiction (sci-fi, Marvel, etc.). I love it when I can read a book, then see the movie (And then talk about the differences).

Fun Facts: I studied Musical Theater in New York City between college and grad school many years ago.

Chad Fogle, 7th/8th/10th: Bible; 8th: American History; 10th: World History

Background:

Chad has been teaching for ten years in student ministry. He got his start leading students in 2002 as a youth intern for Jersey Village Baptist Church. He then moved onto a Youth Minister position at First Baptist Church in Santo, Texas where he remained for six years. That is, until 2015 when he became the Student Pastor at First Baptist Church in Roswell, New Mexico, where he remained until joining the team Gateway.

What is your teaching passion?

My teaching passion is teaching/preaching God's Word and any other subjects from a biblical perspective and worldview. My desire is to see all my students through their academics, sports, and any other extracurricular activities love Jesus Christ above all. I want to see my students love God and His word and for their lives to be so transformed by it that they live lives worthy of the gospel and for the glory of God and for the good of others.

What drew you to Gateway?

What drew me to Gateway is their mission to train their students to view every subject from a biblical worldview. Also, the school, from what I've heard from people in the community, has a good reputation.

What makes you unique from other teachers?

I don't know if it makes me unique, but I have had, by God's grace, experience in working with students in student ministry for ten years. I have had the privilege, but also weighty responsibility in teaching God's word and equipping students for ministry.

What are your teaching goals for the 18/19 school year?

To survive! Ha! Ha! In all seriousness, for the students to enjoy learning God's Word and history from a biblical perspective and worldview.

What opportunities do you offer your students in the classroom?

I give them the opportunity to lead in prayer and give presentations in leadership in the Bible and current events.

How would you describe the atmosphere in your classroom?

I am trying to find a balance between being studious, working hard, being diligent with our time, but also having fun. I encourage class discussion and feedback.

Can you clearly define your teaching philosophy?

The Christian school should support and help the parent, as the primary disciple-maker of their child, in the purpose of strengthening the child academically, emotionally, and spiritually. The goal is for the child to think biblically in all areas of academics and life, to be equipped to go and make disciples and to live lives worthy of the gospel and for the glory of God and for the good of others.

What are your passions outside of teaching?

I enjoy spending time with my wife, family and friends, eating good food (Mexican, Chinese, chocolate), traveling to new places, watching and playing sports (Go Astros, Texans and Rockets!), reading, coffee, listening to sermons, telling other people about Jesus, and teaching/preaching God's word. Also, I have a passion for discipleship and equipping others for the work of ministry (teaching God's word, studying God's word, evangelism).

Learn more about our ,mission and ,programs.

We couldn’t have asked for more beautiful weather, better food, or more fun this year at Lone Tree Ranch in Capitan, NM. High school students, teachers, and staff enjoyed free time, team-building activities, and meaningful times of worship throughout the retreat.

Monday was filled with many activities including horse-back riding, the Alpine Tower high ropes course, the Screamer (pictured above), the zip line, and a giant water slide. After a couple of hours of activities, students were grouped into multi-grade teams to participate in team-building activities. After a full day, we all enjoyed a delicious dinner and settled down for a wonderful time of worship through music led by Mr. Pack and the student praise team followed by a message from Mrs. Rapp. During this time, students were challenged to search God’s word for promises and declarations that they could cling to throughout the coming year. The night ended with a seriously competitive game of volleyball. And although I was only an unofficial referee, I think I can safely say that the guys won the game.

The next morning we enjoyed devotional times in our classes (9, 10, 11, 12), worship through song, and Mr. and Mrs. Stephenson each shared a heartfelt message with the guys and girls, respectively. We ended the retreat with the infamous leg lift competition in which one student had her legs raised for seven whole minutes! I need to start working out more. As always, the Lone Tree staff were fun, thoughtful, and supportive throughout the weekend. I think we all left refreshed spiritually (though maybe a tad sleep-deprived) and ready for a terrific year!

Learn more about our high school classes, events and athletics.
The doctor is in. In fact, Dan Smith is always in whether at his office or adjusting his client’s bodies to get them back in working order. Alternatively, if he’s on the basketball court working on his team to make sure they are in, getting the optimal level of execution out of themselves as a winning basketball team.

This is where Dr. Smith transforms to Coach Smith and lives the other half of his dream. Here he teaches his philosophy on basketball and the intricacies of the motion offenses to the athletes of Gateway Christian.

In today’s world, most people never get a chance to live one dream, let alone two. Smith’s doing both, as a chiropractor during the day, and after business hours, he trades his lab coat in for a whistle around his neck.

Smith is a former basketball player and has loved the game from the time he took it up. It was a passion that wouldn’t go away. As soon as he graduated college, he coached Yucca before he had children. New Mexico Military high school coach Sean Schooley told Smith he’d make an excellent coach and helped him get involved with soccer and basketball.

Smith coached at New Mexico Military Institute as a junior varsity coach for a season before taking over varsity midway through his second season as a head coach.

“I’m a huge basketball fan,” Warriors coach Dan Smith said. “I enjoy watching basketball all over. An opportunity presented itself for me to coach at NMMI and then Gateway.”

What was at stake for the Warriors on Saturday night was nothing more than the district tournament title. Gateway defeated Tatum on Feb. 2, at home, 40-27, by holding the Coyotes to two points in the third quarter. In their return matchup at Tatum, it was the Coyotes who defeated the Warriors 59-54 in two overtimes as Gateway scored only one point in the second overtime.

In the rubber game of the season, nothing was more satisfying than on Saturday night when Gateway went on the road and throttled the No.1 team in the district. The Warriors won by shutting down high-scoring guard Sebastian Jimenez with excellent defensive guard play as they won 48-39.

“We were really emphasizing defense,” Smith said. “Wyatt Arlett and our other guard did a great job on their leading scorer. They contained him, and we feel that was the difference in the game. We had great guard play that night with Jaydon Stephen and Joe Wide giving us scoring.”

One of the main differences between this season and last has been that Smith had a year to work with his team and teach them his system. Smith doesn’t feel like this team has surprised him this season, to the contrary, he was expecting big things from the work the team had put in during summer camps and preseason. The team finished last season with a 20-9 record improving from last season’s 14-13.

“This win gives us a confidence going into the state tournament. As the eighth seed, it doesn’t matter, let’s seed them up and go play.”

Gateway has not played Dora this season and one of the things that concerns coach Smith is Dora has some size and could present matchup problems. Gateway will normally run a man-to-man defense and will vary the scheme depending on the team and game they are playing.

Gateway on offense doesn’t push the pace a lot, preferring to set it up and run a motion offense. During practice, he likes to teach his team how to move without the basketball and get open. Their offense is almost like a high school San Antonio Spur. Smith believes in adjusting his coaching style to fit the talent; he has to fit his team.

“One of the things I like about Gateway is that prayer is not frowned upon,” Smith said. “I will coach anywhere because I love working with kids. I think being at Gateway is a wonderful opportunity.”

Gateway is a young team with only one senior, Alonzo Grajeda. With height as a strength, the Warriors are comfortable playing inside and out. With a young team, Smith thinks his team will be good for years to come as the Warriors play a lot of sophomores. With Grajeda, Smith feels like he can play three- or four-position. Grajeda has a strong post game and inside moves with an outstanding mid-range game.

“The boys have had a great season,” Smith said, “the boys have learned a lot. I am looking forward to the postseason to see how we do.”

Smith’s goal is to improve the kids who play basketball for him, that they will have a high basketball IQ and be better players when they graduate from high school.

“Our team’s motto this year had been us,” Smith said. “Which means, it is not about any one player getting the glory, but about the team getting the glory.”

Gateway will host Dora at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

I had the incredible opportunity of meeting some of the most bubbly, energetic, thoughtful girls this week. I first heard about them a few weeks ago when Mrs. Parker shared with all the students in chapel that these girls had raised money for missions all on their own. My curiosity got the best of me so I had to hear their side of the story for myself. Digging a little bit deeper, I discovered that with determination and heartfelt joy these girls set up a lemonade stand, made their own lemonade, and made $43 to give in the offering bucket at chapel.

Meet the 4 girls who are making a

difference right here in our community.

Hearing their story in their words will be sure to bring a smile to your face. So I have decided to share the interview for you to experience. These girls know how to accomplish their goals with passion and delight, and they are excellent communicators. They will have you cheering for lemondade! But don't just take my word for it. Take a minute to hear it for yourself.

While some NFL players have recently taken a knee or sat on the bench during the national anthem, some local schools have made strong stands of their own about their convictions, faith and patriotism. Some supporters of the Goddard High School football team wear T-shirts that say: “We won’t take a knee.”

And at Gateway Christian High School, Warrior football players have been making a statement about their faith before every home football game for more than 10 years.

The Gateway varsity football team has made the walk — the walk in which the players carry a large purple cross from one side of the field to the other end, where they drive the cross into the ground, and take a knee and pray together as a team.

The concept is nothing new for Gateway head football coach Shaun Wigley, who built the cross in his driveway in 2005.

“We aren’t trying to respond to something,” Wigley said. “We’ve been doing this for nearly a decade, because it’s never a bad time to do the right thing. We just believe that when we honor God first, everything else seems to fall in proper order.”

On Sept. 29, as they did their usual pre-game ritual, the Warriors marched to the song “Go Hard” by Lecrae. The event was recorded by Gary Thomas, who shared the video on Facebook. As of Oct. 4, the video had over 6.5 million views and over 230,000 shares.

Fall is officially here! With the start of the new season comes homecoming, fall festivals and cooler weather (yay!). Unfortunately, fall also bring the start of flu season.

According to the CDC, Flu season stretches from October into May, with a peak period in December - February. So, with flu season looming in the not-too-distant future, there are some precautions we can take to keep this unwanted infection at bay.

1. Wash your hands! Wash your hands!

While we all know this tip, it really is the first line of defense against germs. And children, as they are naturally curious, touching anything they see, it’s good to remind them how important handwashing is.

Experts suggest washing hands with soap & water for at least 20 seconds (or about the amount of time it takes to sing Happy Birthday or the ABC’s) to get the full benefits of hand washing.

2. Keep it to yourself!

We spend a lot of energy teaching our kids how to share, but reminding kids when not to share is vital to keeping germs from spreading. Remind them not to share drinks, food or utensils.

3. Don’t touch that!

The flu virus can live for several hours outside the body, depending on the surface. Just on a person’s hand, the virus can live for up to an hour! (Yuck!)

The flu virus is typically spread when someone touches a contaminated surface, then touches their own mouth, nose or eyes. Teach your children not to touch their face (we know, this one is easier said than done) in conjunction with their stellar hand washing skills.

4. Don’t spray it!

Remind your children, if they don’t have a tissue, to cough/sneeze into the crook of their elbow or into their upper shirt sleeve and not into their hand. Doing so will keep germs from contaminating surfaces and off their hands which can cause germs to spread.

5. Keep your distance!

Limiting contact with those who are ill can assist in keeping the virus from spreading. In your home, setting up a sick zone for the ill person can limit exposure to other family members. Also, Healthline suggests avoiding sharing towels, wash clothes, dishes, and toys. WebMD even went as far as to suggest giving the ill person their own restroom, if you have multiple bathrooms in your home.

---

Along with preventative measures like good hygiene and limited exposure the CDC maintains that the flu vaccination is the best way in preventing the flu, suggesting that the vaccine could prevent the flu risks up to 60%. They suggest for the best protection to get vaccinated before the end of October.

While taking all these precautions can help prevent catching the flu, there are no absolute guarantees. If your child(ren) do get sick be sure to keep them home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours to minimize the spread.

If your child is sick, you can review the call-in policy here.

The 2017 Gateway Cross Country Team recently competed in the Labor Day 5K "Fun Run." And fun it was as 4 of the 5 cross country runners, plus both coaches along with "Ms Becky" won medals by placing in the top three of their respective age groups. It was a good showing for Gateway Christian School. (See Photo)

Perry Toles is back for his 7th season as the Gateway Cross Country Coach. Also helping is Coach Evan Staeden. Both are having a blast running with and training a small but quality team this year.

Only two Varsity runners have returned from last year, Sophomore Logan Kennard and Freshman Isabella Bauder. Both Logan and Bella qualified and competed at the NMAA Cross Country State Championships last year and will be attempting to do the same this year at the October 28th District Meet that will be Hosted at Gateway.

Coach Toles is using Logan as an example of what hard work can accomplish. His NMMI Meet time last weekend was 11 minutes faster than his time the previous year. "He put in the work and time in cross country, in track and all summer long with our running group" said Coach Toles.

On the Junior High squad, 7th grader Jace Worley returns for his second cross country season and has already won two firsts and a second at the first three meets.

Joining the XC team for the first time are Sophomore Gavin Kennard and 7th grader Kayley Smith. Both are bettering their times at each meet.
